Gene therapy against hereditary Retinal Diseases

At the moment there are no effective methods of treating hereditary retinal diseases that cause vision loss. For example, some forms of retinitis pigmentosa and most often, this disease affects adults. The cells of the photoreceptor begin to die which leads to night blindness and a decrease in the radius of the visual field. Over time, complete blindness occurs.

To solve this problem, scientists and doctors hope to use viruses or vectors to deliver the necessary genes to the desired cells. In particular, it is expected that the use of recombinant vector AAV2, encoding a functional copy of the RPE65 gene, will be approved.

In 2017, the FDA awarded gene therapy RPE65 the status of a medicine for rare diseases, and in October, a group of US health advisors recommended approval of these latest innovations in healthcare.
